British Airways has announced a major change to its loyalty programme that will affect all Avios points collectors. From Monday 15th December 2025, the price of Reward Flights (flights booked using Avios points) will increase. These changes affect both the Avios points required and the cash component of the booking. The airline explained that the increases are driven by rising Air Passenger Duty, higher third-party charges, changing market conditions, and ongoing inflation.
What Is Changing?
British Airways shared several real-world examples of how Avios pricing will increase from December 2025. Although these are only examples, BA confirmed that the pricing will rise across the board.
Example 1: London → New York (Off-Peak, Return)
Cabin | Current Price | New Price (From 15th Dec) |
Economy | 50,000 Points + £100 | 55,000 Points + £120 |
Premium Economy | 85,000 Points + £305 | 93,500 Points + £350 |
Business Class | 160,000 Points + £375 | 176,000 Points + £399 |
First Class | 136,000 points + taxes/fees | 150,000 points + taxes/fees |
Example 2: London → Geneva (Off-Peak, One-Way)
Cabin | Current Price | New Price (From 15th Dec) |
Economy | 9,250 Points + 50p | 10,000 Points + £1 |
Business Class | 15,000 Points + £12.50 | 16,500 + £15 |
How does this affect future reward flights that have already been booked?
British Airways confirmed that changes to existing bookings will not trigger repricing, as long as the change is made before 15 December 2025. If you were to make changes to existing bookings after 15th December and the flight stays within the same destination and season, there will be no extra Avios points charged. In previous Avios devaluations, British Airways required members to pay the new, higher rates whenever they changed the dates of an existing reward booking. This time, however, BA seems to be allowing more flexibility.
British Airways will no longer release awards chart
British Airways has confirmed that it will not be releasing a new award chart. Instead, travellers will need to figure out the new pricing themselves once the update goes live. BA previously would publish a clear, distance-based chart, but it has moved away from that system. As a result, Avios pricing is now less predictable, and the cost of reward flights can vary depending on demand and other factors.
How To Avoid the Price Increases?
You can still lock in today's prices by booking before 15 December 2025. Another option is to book a placeholder flight. Since British Airways has confirmed that date changes won’t trigger repricing under the new rules, you can book a flight 9–12 months in advance and later move it to your actual travel dates, while keeping the current Avios rates.
You can also take advantage of other Avios programmes. Points can be freely transferred between Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Finnair Plus, Iberia Plus, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. If those partner programmes don’t devalue their award charts at the same time, you may be able to book the exact same flights for fewer points.
